Starting a blog for your business is an excellent first step in content marketing. Blogging is one of the best ways to build your brand and drive traffic to your website - when done consistently.

Plenty of folks dip their toes into the world of blogging, get excited, and then go months between posts or worse, never write another post. Then down the line they'll wonder 'why blogging never worked for them' and figure it's not for their business. Blogging may suit some industries better than others, but if you're not consistent with your blog then you won't see results.

The top news sites/blogs publish posts throughout the day, sometimes at a rate of once per minute. How can you compete with that? The short answer - you can't.

The key then is quality and consistency. There are sites that blog once a week and see immense success, so whether you blog daily, weekly, or monthly you need to ensure you are writing at a frequency that allows you to maintain a high level of quality, and add value to your site visitors.

So, how often should I blog?

Think of your blog as a chart of diminishing returns. As you increase your post frequency invariably quality will drop, or your content will become repetitive. Ideally then you want to blog as frequently as you can while maintaining

  • Quality
  • Creativity
  • Attracting the right audience

If you are reaching a point where you cannot meet those requirements, maybe you are posting too frequently. If you have a bit more left in the tank so to speak, then by all means write more - just make sure it is a frequency that you can handle week in and week out.

You should test it out though. Run an experiment for a month or two at different posting frequencies and analyze your site traffic.
