Want to know the secret to “strategy?”

Strategy is nothing more than a coordinated set of decisions designed to win.

That’s the definition I learned at HubSpot, and it stuck with me ever since.

So what are those decisions? Let me walk you through them.

1. Set a goal

What is the strategic outcome you wish to achieve? “More traffic” or “better leads” are not goals. Be specific. Do you want to increase revenue by 50% in the next 12 months?

2. Define your ideal customer

Once a goal is determined, who will you reach to meet that goal?

An ideal customer is not a two-dimensional list of adjectives. Really dig into who your best-fit customers are, along with their goals, pain points, and triggers.

In other words, what makes them buy products like yours?

3. Map out the buyer’s journey

Next, we must chart the course your ideal customer takes as they search for a solution to their problems and make a buying decision.

We’ve worked with clients to run surveys, interview their customers, conduct keyword and market research... whatever it takes to accurately map the sequence of steps their customers take to make a purchase.

4. Create content that uniquely serves your customer

Once we know the journey, we can then put you on the map by creating content that meets your ideal buyer at every point of their journey.

Tangibly, this looks like a sequence of content created at every buying stage along with assets to convert them and turn them into a lead that can be nurtured.

We take a product-led approach to content by treating each piece of content as a feature of your website that has two jobs:

  1. Drive traffic
  2. Convert that traffic

How do we know how effective this content is? That's where the final step comes in.

5. Measure and optimize

Even seasoned marketing veterans struggle with this. If we can’t measure your progress against your goal then all this work is for naught.

How do we measure?

Simple.

Go back to the goal and work backwards. How is the content we create moving us closer toward the goal? Which content performs best?

Marketing is treated as a black box, but I hope you can see that a strategic framework such as this treats it more like a science.
